Why Your Workouts Stop Working After 35 (And What to Do Instead)

Have you ever found yourself thinking:

"I'm working just as hard as I did in my 20s...so why aren't I seeing the same results?"

If you're a woman over 35, you're not imagining it.

I hear this from women all the time. They're exercising consistently, trying to make healthy food choices, and doing "all the right things," yet they still feel frustrated by low energy, stubborn weight, and a body that doesn't seem to respond the way it once did.

The truth is, your body is changing—and that's completely normal.

The good news? It doesn't mean your best years are behind you. It simply means your fitness approach needs to evolve.

Why Your Body Changes After 35

As women move through their late 30s and 40s, our bodies naturally begin to change.

We gradually lose muscle mass, our metabolism slows, recovery takes longer, and hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause can affect everything from energy levels to where we store body fat.

If you've been relying on the same workouts you've always done, it's no surprise they don't feel as effective anymore.

This isn't about working harder.

It's about working smarter.

Why Strength Training Matters More Than Ever

If I could recommend one thing for every woman over 35, it would be strength training.

Not because I want you to become a bodybuilder.

Because I want you to stay strong for life.

Strength training helps you:

  • Preserve and build lean muscle

  • Support healthy bones as you age

  • Increase your metabolism

  • Improve posture and balance

  • Reduce your risk of injury

  • Increase energy throughout the day

  • Feel stronger and more confident in everyday life

Strength isn't just about how much weight you can lift.

It's about carrying groceries with ease, keeping up with your kids or grandkids, traveling confidently, and living an active life for years to come.

Let's Talk About the Biggest Myth...

One of the most common things I hear is:

"I don't want to lift weights because I don't want to get bulky."

I completely understand the concern—but here's the truth.

Women don't accidentally become bulky.

Building significant muscle requires years of intentional training, progressive overload, and eating in a calorie surplus. For most women, strength training creates the exact opposite effect.

It helps develop lean muscle, improve body composition, and create the strong, toned look so many women are hoping for.

The goal isn't to become bigger.

The goal is to become stronger.

Don't Forget About Cardio

Strength training should be the foundation of your fitness routine, but cardio still plays an important role.

Cardiovascular exercise supports heart health, improves endurance, reduces stress, and complements your strength training beautifully.

Instead of choosing one or the other, think of them as teammates.

Strength training builds your foundation.

Cardio supports your overall health.

Together, they're a powerful combination.

What I Recommend

For most women over 35, a balanced routine looks something like this:

  • Strength training 2–3 times per week

  • Cardio 2–3 times per week

  • Daily walking whenever possible

  • Mobility or stretching to improve flexibility and recovery

  • Prioritizing quality sleep and proper nutrition

Remember, consistency will always outperform perfection.

You don't need to spend hours in the gym.

You simply need a plan that works for your body and your lifestyle.

My Journey Changed Everything

There was a time when I believed I could outwork poor habits.

As a former athlete, I assumed I would always be able to "get back" to where I wanted to be. But after years of building my corporate career, traveling constantly, juggling motherhood, and putting everyone else's needs ahead of my own, I found myself exhausted, disconnected from my body, and frustrated that what used to work no longer did.

That experience changed the course of my life.

I realized that lasting health isn't built through extreme workouts or quick fixes. It's built through strength, balanced nutrition, sustainable habits, and giving ourselves permission to become a priority again.

That's exactly why I coach women today.

Because I know what it's like to feel stuck—and I also know it's possible to feel strong again.

Ready to Build Strength That Lasts?

If you're ready to stop guessing what your body needs and start building a fitness routine that supports you through every season of life, I'd love to help.

Through my EVOLVE coaching program, I help women 35+ build strength, improve energy, and create sustainable fitness habits that last.

Your body isn't working against you.

It's simply asking for a different approach.

And I promise—it's never too late to become the strongest version of yourself.
